Get an ABN, you will need that for invoicing etc etc.
The name lets you use a "catchty" business name (as you are not allowed to use a false name, it MUST be registered). It also helps if you use a website, also looks more professional...
It does stop others using your name, but if you want full protection, you need to trademark it with ASIC.
I advise you have a business account, and "pay" yourself from it. makes accounting and the like much easier...
