1990's car mod/drag racing game, whats it called??

I remember playing this game in the early 90's on my PC.

It was based in the 1950's and you look in the newspaper for a car like a 59 Corvette then drive it back to your garage to paint it and give it a tune up.

Then you can look in the paper to buy mods for the car like a bigger motor, racing tyres or gearbox so you can take the car to the Diner where other guys in cars approach you for a drag and you can check out whats under their bonnet. The drag race is for Pink slips or money I think where you earn more to buy more mods.
After the drag race you gotta tune it up again and see how much tread is left on the tyres and so on.

The driving bit was kinda boring as its the same strait road every time except it may rain or be at night time but looking up the paper to buy bits and doing up the cars to get more performance was cool for an old game.

I just cannot remember the name! Anyone still see it on the shelvs? or is it downloadable now off the net?

Someone here MUST know this game im on about.

Street rodding and street rodding 2 are the games you speak of.

Street Rod 1 & 2

There's a link for "Dos Box" on both pages. You'll probably need to run these games inside this virtual DOS environment to make it work

Linky no worky mate.

Bobman 31-01-2010 02:07 PM

Ah, I used to play that all the time when I got my first computer in 1995. Still have both games on this computer too. Haven't played in over a decade.

 Street Rod...i knew it was something like that.

Geez, it turns back the clock a bit though, i remember playing it on an Amiga 500 20 years ago.

Classic stuff!

JamesR 31-01-2010 05:09 PM

SVR73 31-01-2010 07:30 PM

Street Rod was from 1989 and I still have and play on my C128 PC's occassionally

Cam 31-01-2010 07:47 PM

hahahaha, I downloaded it a few months ago. Wow, what a trip down memory lane! Played a heap of other old games as well, dosbox ftw!

Riksta 31-01-2010 08:12 PM

I still play Street Rod 1 & 2 on a regular basis.

I love the "cheat" somewhere there's a certain car you buy, strip, and sell the shell for a stupid amount of money and it accepts the sale, straight back to the paper for the best car & best bits.

And yeah, DOSBox is awesome for allowing you to play all the oldschool games.

And there has been a team of people working on Street Rod 3, first I heard of it was probably about four years ago, and not much happens on the website, so I really don't know if its ever really going to happen, but would be awesome if it did: http://www.streetrod3.com/

Street Rod 3 has been on the go for years, last I heard they canned it early last year.

Mr Hardware 31-01-2010 11:23 PM

Haha funny you mention this, i started re-playing this game only a few days ago

fordOwner 02-02-2010 04:10 PM

WOW! Thats the game!! haha, I cant believe its still played! and a Street Rod 3!! Thats it im downloading this/buying it as i miss it so much.

Thanks for helping me out with the name of the game guys.

I prefere the old original games like this as its not too complicated. like the original Sim City, easy to play and fun - The new Sim City games are waaaay too complicated to be fun in my mind.

Thanks again guys, bring back Streed Rod!

Just looked at the web sites, YES! what a trip down memory lane! and the game TEST DRIVE! oh, im not going to be bored for the next few weeks!

RedHotGT 03-02-2010 11:08 AM

I've still got these games... and really... they were great... especially for their time...

If there was a new-school version of this - it would be incredible...

Changing Engines, Spray Jobs, Gearboxes...
Buying the car in the trading post type paper...
Cheaper cars usually had problems (warn out bits)...
Tuning was as easy as a couple of clicks...

yeah it was awesome... loved it...
particulary SR2 - where you had Mulholland Drive... you could drive a street course which was quite difficult... and then the aquaduct... that was my PINKSLIP race...

Oh so many memories..

I also liked STUNTS...
Couldn't customise cars... but you could build your own tracks... and it was KILLER!!!!!!

I'm going to download these now so I can play them straight away...

LTDHO 03-02-2010 02:01 PM

3 bolts and a wire and engine is out!
Tune car via alternator.

Love it.

Trek 03-02-2010 11:54 PM

Loved playing all three of those games (SR 1&2 + Stunts) when I was younger, still have them on my hard drive! :)

This used to be the biggest game for me on the C64.... Dam guy in the Black Corvette (pinkslips), used to bump you all the way......
I still think you can download an emulator to play the game in the old format....But never the same though.
Between this game and Defender of the Crown, they were the best games for the time (C64).

Lol, "The King" wasn't it?

Damn those games were good... Not car related, but I still love The Incredible Machine series too.

Would you guys believe this, my Dad bought an Amiga 1000 back in 1986 (expensive!) and we had perhaps 200 programs and games, I dont live at home anymore, and I always made the point that its great and to leave it there.. my mum threw it out a few weeks ago! It was in perfect condition, a classic worth a fair bit like that...and all the games. I was really really annoyed.

And yep, had street rod 1 2 and stunts as well. Stunts was great! and so were the others. ALso had Test drive 1 2 and 3, all the car games pretty much...

TZENU 05-02-2010 12:03 PM

Close but no Cigar punk!!!!!...

Love it

InfernoSR 09-02-2010 02:32 PM

I feel your pain. I had a couple of C64's, disk drives, as well as a complete 128D including monitor, an Amstrad CPC-664, an Atari 2600 and a Sega Megadrive.

Moved out back in about 2000-ish, left them in my wardrobe which stayed at my parents place (place I was renting had built ins, so took the clothes & left the wardrobe there with a heap of my stuff in it).

Few months later I called to tell them I was coming by to pick up all my old computer stuff, it had all mysteriously disappeared.... I was NOT happy at all. I THINK an old Apple Mac Plus that I got when my high school sold them out for $15 each still exists here somewhere.

These days though I've got emulators for pretty much every old system (including DOSBox to play the old PC games that won't run properly under newer OS's) - but its still just not quite the same.
