Top Gear Polar Special Mistake

I know its probably an old episode but I only just watched it in sbs. Did anyone else notice that they kept changing from one vehicle to another. One had a safety glass smasher thingo mounted by the cabin light and the other didn't. A brilliant episode however.

BHDOGS 07-01-2008 09:37 PM

They drove to the north pole end of story never speak bad of top gear again

pertuan 07-01-2008 10:04 PM

Maybe it fell off?

Ives 07-01-2008 10:05 PM

Dammit i missed it :/

TadKa 07-01-2008 10:09 PM

possibly. it kept going from being there to not being there to being there again. I guess they could have chopped up footage to fit the story.

andrewts 07-01-2008 10:10 PM

Well I'm sure they didn't just sit around waiting when they pranged the truck they probably drove the other one they had as well.

the_scotsman 07-01-2008 10:37 PM

One of the best episodes ever!

For those who missed it...use the usual sources, or it's freely available on YouTube.

Kryton 07-01-2008 10:39 PM

cant say i noticed it personally but i did notice that the tyres were mostly flat then they werent then they were etc, so maybe they did change trucks?
at the end of the day though, who cares if it took them 8 trucks to get there....they still got there.
something NO ONE else in the whole world can say.

Captain Stubing 07-01-2008 10:39 PM

They had a tow vehicle with them. They might have been swapping between vehicles?

Haven't you ever seen them sarcastically comment on the awards they receive for being the "best nonscripted" or "best factual" show?

Dazza XLT 07-01-2008 10:52 PM

It was rough as guts, and Clarkson drove like a Maniac. Probably just fell out of it's holder.
Maybe the holder fell off altogether? Dodgy installation?
Could have also been knocked off if they were fumbling around for the interior light switch (But it was daylight the whole time, so that rules that out)

Or May knocked it off reaching for the Gin every 5 minutes. :yelrotflm

Yeeaahh that tends to happen in a 4 x 4 when you deflate the tyres, you go over terrain like that, the car rises and the tyres look inflated. On the soft stuff you deflate, when you hit the hard stuff, you add air again.

Rodp 07-01-2008 11:13 PM

IIRC, they had a couple of Lux's. He fair bent one of them driving like a maniac, maybe they handed the bent one to the plebs and they took of in the support vehicles Lux.

AnthonyQLD 07-01-2008 11:17 PM

the surport hilux was the same colour, but had the canopy on the back also had a winch on the front, they used footage from both cars

BOOSTDEF 07-01-2008 11:20 PM

Best Episode Ever.....

The way he was handling the bumpy ice was incredible. How a 4x4 could withstand that for days straight is beyond me. (Although the fuel tank and shockie didnt like it lol)..

Did you see how those eskimo dudes put the tire back on the rim?? Was amazing.

mad cow 07-01-2008 11:23 PM

there were actually 3 red hiluxs on the trek. the 2 support cars had canopys and one also had a trailer loaded with gear. what i would love to know if the ice on the fjord was so dangerous how did they get the whole team over when the clarkson car would have to be the lightest loaded of the 3 cars.

it was basically just a Prerunner set up for snow, nothing hard or uncommon to achieve.
check out Youtube for Prerunners and then CORR / Trophy Trucks (prerunners on steriods!!)

edit:a prerunner site for anyone interested: http://www.prerunnermaniac.com/

Watch Season 5 ep3 where Jeremy reviews the Dodge SRT-10 and in the studio he describes the Vipers gearchange as "like moving the lever in a victorian signal box".

Watch Season 4 ep10 where Hamster reviews the Corvette and you'll notice he says this about the Vette's gearbox "the gearchange has been taken straight out of a victorian signal box. :yelrotflm

Now that's what I call nitpicking....

Turbot 07-01-2008 11:43 PM

bf tubs 07-01-2008 11:44 PM

Scott 07-01-2008 11:47 PM

Great episode - highlights were the G&T's, Clarkson embracing the flat ice and the phone call to Hammond at the end.

Jack91 07-01-2008 11:47 PM

Yeah, there was a shot in there with the red dual cab, the other red dual cab with canopy and a black stock locking prado or landcruiser or something?

last fairlane 07-01-2008 11:48 PM

clarkson north pole trip

Hi all re how many Hiluxes were there
To those who can remember 1979 Peter perfect drove 3 Commodores round Aus and called it one and also in the same race from memory Ford used a Cortina with Falcon suspension or was it an XD with Cortina suspension who cares nothing is real any more
Back in 1985 I watched Bathurst and a race preped Gemini blew away a showroom stock V8 5.0litre Commodore down conrod
its horses for courses thanks for listening JOHN still a good show

Bent8 07-01-2008 11:50 PM

Here's another Top Gear mistake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0s4OAMISN4.....watch him dyno both cars (about 3min into the vid)and try not to laugh too hard :yelrotflm

sfr rob 07-01-2008 11:52 PM

For some reason, the lux's looked really, really good, the flares and big tyres did it for me i think.

SHOWDOWN 07-01-2008 11:55 PM

Top episode, loved when he was on the can as the 4x4 was rolling. The look on their faces as they drove a 3 tonne lux over ice was to die for...

Ozzie

+1 dam good episode that one

LTDHO 08-01-2008 08:43 AM

Great epposode.

I don't think the roof glass hammer was a fault, from seen clarksons driving, I'm surprised the vehilce only did, tyre, fuel tank, drive shaft and shocker.

ltd 08-01-2008 09:44 AM

The actual original Polar Special goes for about 1 hour and ten minutes. What we were shown went for around 50 minutes. In the original, they went on to talk about rocking the car back and forth to get out of being bogged, as well as talking about running the tyres as low as 2 psi over the really soft snow where they got bogged and rocking didn't work. They then went on to talk about the onboard compressor in the back to re-inflate the tyres. In the training part they talk to a guy about frostbite, and he shows them pictures of a guy with frostbite on his wedding vegetables. We did actually miss quite a bit of the show. As for the emergency hammer, it simply kept falling off, and the BBC are adament that it was the one Hilux these guys used.
